The first time you log in, you'll be asked to select a home world. Choose any world you like. You can play with friends on different home worlds if your worlds are on the same regional server (North America or Europe). Your home world determines which team you'll fight for in World vs. World, a player vs. player game mode for level-80 characters.

Your decisions are a lot more relevant, and there's more than just one story for each class. The game is overall very group friendly. There's no such things as kill stealing, everyone has unique loot, everything scales accordingly, and so on. It is built from the start with the multiplayer aspect in mind.
Some advice about playing the living world with a friend. Make sure you're on the same exact step by reading the story text before you enter any instance. There are plenty of NPCs to talk to in the open world, or mails to read that won't advance your story step if you don't actually do it.
Different races often have different animations for the same class, as in, a Charr Elementalist will move completely different from a Human or Asura Ele. You can get a whole different "feel" from playing one race or another, starting with size, animation, Fashion-Wars-viability, personal story, etc.
Hey, I just started playing gw2 with a friend he took human as a race and I took Norn as a race, first I thought that you just had to complete a tutorial on your starting region and then you can move on.
